BHAWANIPATNA: A 22-year-old woman sustained burns on her face and hands after a man threw acid on her for not accepting his love proposal in Kalahandi district early on Monday morning. The girl, Debanti Bihari, 22, was critically injured after Parshuram Majhi, 35, allegedly threw acid on her face over unrequited love.
The incident took place when the victim, who has completed Plus III Arts from Kalampur College, was on her way to attend computer classes at Kalampur at 7 am.
Parshuram allegedly stopped the girl near Bankapalla canal and threw acid on her face.
Sub-divisional police officer (Dharmagarh) Surendranath Satapathy said the man had proposed to her thrice in the past one year and wanted to have physical relationship with her. He had threatened her many times as she had refused his proposal, he added.
Police sources said Debanti jumped into a nearby canal after the attack to relieve herself of the burning sensation. She was rescued by a group of villagers and admitted to Kalampur CHC and later referred to the district headquarters hospital when her condition became critical, Satapthy said.
According to preliminary probe by police, two days ago the man had told his family that he was going to Hyderabad in search of a job but he had hidden in the village and waited for the girl to take revenge.
Police have seized the cap of the acid bottle. Her father has lodged a police complaint. "We have launched a manhunt to nab the culprit," said a police officer.
